Fall Lawn Maintenance Tips

Colder weather is fast approaching Ohio, and it's important that your lawn and garden are prepared for the winter months ahead. While preparing your yard for winter might seem like an unnecessary task, a well-prepared yard is easier to rejuvenate in the springtime. Before packing away your garden tools, follow these simple tips to ensure your yard is ready for the season ahead.

One of the first tasks that should not be overlooked during the fall season is mowing your lawn. A typical rule when it comes to mowing is to cut the grass until it stops growing. Also, be sure to increase the height in which you set your mower. As the season gets cooler, you'll want to cut the lawn higher.

Once your lawn has stopped growing, you should clean and store your mower. Start by running the mower until it's out of gas. Gas left in the tank over the winter months can become gummy and clog the fuel lines. Second, clean leftover grass clippings from under the mower and inside the bag. A properly-stored mower will start up better come springtime.

You should also prepare your plants and trees for the cooler weather. Avoid heavy pruning during the fall months, and instead simply remove dead branches off your trees and shrubbery. You should also touch up the mulch around the base of your plants, especially perennials. A thick layer of mulch around your plants will add much-needed winter protection. Plants that don't do well in the winter, such as tropical foliage or summer-flowering bulbs, should be taken inside for the cooler months. You should also clean and store any pots and containers to avoid damage and ensure they are ready to use next year.

Lastly, properly store your garden tools. You want to remove any built up dirt and sharpen the blades on necessary tools. It's also good to drain your hose of any water and store in a dry place. Water left in the hose can freeze and crack the lining, causing the hose to leak.
